Slow Burn, but Good Show

Posted : 1 year, 12 months ago on 5 December 2022 11:38 (A review of Black Clover)

It took me a while to like this show; at first it was my last result for entertainment when nothing else was on. But eventually I got hooked. It seems like a derivative cookie-cutter anime, but it eventually takes the time to do things quite differently compared to other shows like it. This makes it feel like a fresh new, addictive series. Great for binge watching!

Action, redefined

Posted : 1 year, 12 months ago on 5 December 2022 11:35 (A review of Bleach)

For anyone who enjoys action anime, this is the stuff to watch. Bleach revolves around Kurosaki Ichigo, a regular always-grouchy high-schooler who for some strange reason is able to see the souls of the dead around him. Although they are not usually dangerous, there are some called 'hollows' that aim to eat the regular ones, and on one fateful night, his entire family is put in danger by them. A death god, Kuchiki Rukia, happens to be there to battle these creatures, and after a dangerous mistake she is forced to give her powers to Ichigo in order to defeat the monster.

Henceforth, Ichigo has to take over her duties as a death god, protecting good spirits and other humans from hollows. The action in this series is stylish and fast paced, and the story line has you wanting more almost every episode. Ichigo is funny because of his ever-grouchy personality, and his friends are just as hilarious in their own way.

If you watch any anime at all this year, make Bleach number 1 on that list.

Best anime series of the year

Posted : 1 year, 12 months ago on 5 December 2022 11:31 (A review of Bakemonogatari)

Warning: Spoilers
"To be blunt, I just enjoy talking to you... so I want to talk with you some more." "If our opinions clash, let's talk it over."

'Bakemonogatari' is about five not-so-normal girls that Araragi Koyomi, a vampire himself, encounters and attempt to save them from abnormalities that's been troubling them.

The main characters of 'Bakemonogatari' are among the most unique and complex I have yet to encounter.

Heroine Senjougahara Hitagi is a tsundere like half of all modern heroines in anime, but she is also 「ドS」, a sadist to an extreme degree, which is more common for side characters and rare for heroines. Our protagonist, as expected, is rather on the masochist side who takes on constant verbal abuse from Senjougahara.

What makes the couple extraordinary, is that Senjougahara is often boke while Araragi is tsukkomi. Traditional Japanese stand-up comedy consists of a duo: One takes the boke role who says something stupid while the tsukommi role points out how boke is ridiculous, often with a violent slap in the head.

The leading couple in this series, on the other hand, take turns with roles. It is particularly interesting when the sadist and intelligent Senjougahara purposefully take on boke role and overwhelms the tsukkomi. Such as making insulting statements that sound flawed, but when Araragi tries to make a comeback, he realizes what she said was true. Or Senjougahara makes a blatantly flawed statement just to hurt Araragi. And of course, plenty of intentional boke or tease spoken with so much authority that Araragi just gives up and let it slide.

The unlikely toggling of comedy roles were executed extremely well, and this back and forth interaction between the leading couple is a key part of this show's appeal.

There are 6 main characters in this series, and total of only 5 side/peripheral characters (Meme, Shinobu, Sisters, and Senjougahara's father) in the whole series. The limited character headcount made thorough character development possible despite being an arc-based series.

Simply put, half the show is about the romantic relationship between the Senjougahara and Araragi. The other half is about a constant argument between two values: The rational vs the idealistic, with Araragi as Mr. Nice Guy seeking happy end for everyone. Solution of supernatural abnormalities as the topic of the argument.

While the pacing of the show is extremely fast with approximately 3 times as many dialogs per episode, they stick to one subject long enough for each argument to sink in.

Each arc is an incident focused on a different girl, but the five arcs combine to show a whole picture of Araragi and Senjougahara closing their personal distances. The TV broadcast ended abruptly, but the final three episodes over the web distribution were essential in developing their relationship. In the end, Araragi escaped the indecisive protagonist tendencies that many harem series are plagued with, through confrontation with Senjougahara's primary rival in romance.

"Bakemonogatari" is a verbal performance with visual support. Story is driven by back and forth debate on various issues.

With verbal performance playing such a big role in this show, voice acting is done on a whole new level in this series. Every characters' voices fit perfectly, and not only that, distinct tones and nuance of speech establishes the personal image for every single character. I don't think it's an exaggeration to describe voice acting in this series as epic.

Music scores in 'Bakemonogatari' have generally consistent ambient feel to it, and has a nice flow. Other than intense music for action scenes, they don't particularly set the mood or enhance drama as what I usually consider to be strong BGM for anime, BUT the usually upbeat sound in the background sets the quick pace for dialogs, and makes the conversations all the more engaging, which worked very well for a series like this.

OP song "Staple Stable" was possibly the best anime opening theme song by a seiyuu, ever. Really memorable tune accompanied by great vocal and lyric by meg rock was simply amazing.

Animation in 'Bakemonogatari' mainly serve as a visual aid to the verbal performance, and it was done extremely well.

Visuals for the anime got somewhat of an "art house film" treatment. There were many abstract and surreal scenes, unconventional cuts, and intriguing camera angles that made the viewing experience very pleasant.

Character design was attractive, the main characters showed a wide range of emotion that further portrays the character's state of mind.

The only complaint I have with the animation is the use of photographs/videos of real-life imagery. At the risk of sounding like a super-otaku, I would say 3D images do not belong in the world of 2D.

'Bakemonogatari' is a true masterpiece with experimental production that actually worked. Attention was paid to the tiniest details, and a story well-told through series of verbal performances. Wonderful direction by Shinbou Akiyuki left us with so many memorable scenes, and this will definitely be a series to be remembered.

Re-watch value is insanely high. In fact, I have watched the first 12 episodes at least 5 times while waiting for the web broadcasts. There's so much going on the screen during conversations, that you'll discover something new every single time.

The 8-month wait for the final three episodes was excruciating, but the ending wrapped everything up well enough that it was almost worth the absurd wait. Given the commercial success 'Bakemonogatari' has achieved, I will be hoping the remaining novels of the series to be animated. A prequel 'Kizumonogatari' OVA/film and possibly 'Nisemonogatari' as a sequel season would be great.

To be blunt, I just enjoyed listening to them... so I want to listen to them some more.

Best animated film of 2012? Absolutely!

Posted : 1 year, 12 months ago on 4 December 2022 07:10 (A review of Wreck-It Ralph)

I think 2012 has been a very good, even great, year for animation in that I don't think I have seen an animated film I've disliked. Wreck It Ralph for me was the best animated film from 2012(although it only came out yesterday in the UK I still class it as a 2012 film), tying with Tangled as the best Disney has done since The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It has something for children and adults alike, and I don't think you have to be a video game fan to like it(I'm not exactly, more of Disney myself, but am very familiar with them through my brother). The animation is wonderful, the characters move with no problem at all, the colours look gorgeous and the backgrounds are detailed, very like the very best of Pixar actually. The music, right from the tempos, rhythms, melodies, chord progressions and instrumentation, is full of energy and the songs are incredibly catchy. The writing is a perfect blend of humour and heart, the film is often hilarious and witty as well as heartfelt and touching in equal measures and the story is fast-paced and much more original than you'd think complete with energetic-but not too frantic- action. I like the Be Youself message, it is an important one and I personally didn't think it was heavy-handed. And of course any video game fan will love spotting the video game characters and references, there's plenty of them and all are colourfully evoked. I found it very easy to relate to Ralph, Fix-it Felix Jr is an amusing character and Vanellope is cute without being annoying or mawkish. The voice work is terrific, with the standout being the gruff vulnerability that John C Reilly brings to Ralph. In conclusion, a wonderful film and the best animated film of the year. 10/10 Bethany Cox

This blew me away!

Posted : 1 year, 12 months ago on 4 December 2022 06:55 (A review of Anastasia)

This is my personal favourite of the Don Bluth movies. I also recommend American Tail, Land Before Time and All Dogs Go To Heaven. Anastasia is just beautiful, and was one of the most requested films when we had our family cinemas. A couple of years ago, I got it on video, and all those memories came back. I love this movie so much. The animation is gorgeous. The characters are well drawn, and the backgrounds and colours are stunning. There is a lot of wit between the characters. Not to mention a truly sweet romance between Anastasia and Dimitri. Whoever hated this movie, must be told, that this is so much more watchable than Richard Rich's King and I. Anastasia herself is so beautiful. The highlights were Anastasia's dream and the scene on the train. The songs are what make this movie. My favourite is "Once Upon a December" as it is so nostalgic, haunting and poignant. All the other songs are well done and move the story forward. Even "Dark of the Night". As for the story, yes it is historically inaccurate, but so is Pocahontas, and this is marginally better. It was so well told. In some Don Bluth movies, they lose the essence right from minute one, but not here. As for the voice talents, they were all impeccable. Meg Ryan was suitably feisty as Anastasia, and Liz Callaway did her singing voice beautifully. John Cusack put an immense amount of charm into his voice-over, although Dimitri was for me was the weakest character in the movie. Kelsey Grammar has great fun as Vladmir, and also check him out as Zozi in Bartok the Magnificent. Christopher Lloyd voices villain Rasputin with over the top menace, and the villain loses his body parts here. We have all had days like that. Hank Azaria is also great as Bartok.Underrated Broadway actress Bernadette Peters has a great french accent, and I had so much fun with her singing "Paris hold the key to your heart." For me, Angela Lansbury provides a completely human and poignant character in the Dowager Empress. Her prologue was so well paced, and there was a side to the great character actress that I never knew she had. In conclusion, a sweet and beautiful animation that is essential to all animation lovers. 9.5/10 Bethany Cox

A great anime series

Posted : 1 year, 12 months ago on 4 December 2022 12:18 (A review of Little Witch Academia)

This was one of the most fun and entertaining anime I have seen in a long time, instead of relying on fanservice or moe jokes, Little Witch Academia is a show with light humor and a really enjoyable quest of Akko trying to be like her idol Shiny Chariot, but constantly fails at it

One of the things I like about this show is the characters, most of the characters have really distinct and likable personalities, they may not be really complex characters, but they provide an enjoyable dynamics and interactions with each other, even Akko, who can get really get annoying some parts, still is really lovable and full of personality

Other thing I like about this show is the world-building, this show such a fascinating world that makes you interested in the different types of locations the characters explore

And finally one aspect I really like is the animation and art-style, the staff did an amazing job at recreating the magic and emotion of classic Disney, with such vibrant colors and amazing character animation and expressions, and although there are times when the animation quality can be inconsistent, the show has a really amazing animation, and probably the best in the studio library

However, the show isn't perfect, mainly because of pacing issues, that some characters aren't really developed as others, some writing issues, and that some episodes aren't as good as others

But despite all its flaws, it's still a great anime series full with likable characters, good writing and humor, and amazing animation, it may not be one of the best anime ever made, but is still a show I highly recommend

13. Diane (Seven Deadly Sins)

Posted : 1 year, 12 months ago on 4 December 2022 12:26 (A review of Diane)

Diane is another sweet character who could absolutely decimate you if need be.

As a giantess, she is larger than ordinary people but no less friendly. She cares very much for her captain and isn’t afraid to be hostile if it means protecting her friends.

Despite having the advantage of size, she often does wish she were smaller and also exhibits some emotional fragility, hating the thought of being alone.

Later in the show, Diane is seen to take up dance to improve her combat skills. The result made her a terrifying beauty and one of the best combatants among the giants.

It’s no wonder she was predicted to be their future leader.

18. Android 18 (Dragon Ball Z)

Posted : 1 year, 12 months ago on 3 December 2022 11:55 (A review of Android 18)

Android 18 was probably one of the earliest crushes we had in anime. Her tough, silent demeanor meant business and she kicked ass like she meant business to all while maintaining her perfect, short hair.

19. Meiko Shiraki (Prison School)

Posted : 1 year, 12 months ago on 3 December 2022 11:54 (A review of Meiko Shiraki)

For all the BDSM fans, this is for you. Meiko is the vice-president of the Undergraduate Student Council, a vigilante student organization designed to punish students for misconduct. She is one of the main discipliners for the boys during their two months and her huge assets contributed to a lot of newfound masochist excitement for many fans watching this show. Not only were her punishments cruel, they were hilariously executed which made this show and her character tha much better.

3. Mirajane Strauss (Fairy Tail)

Posted : 1 year, 12 months ago on 3 December 2022 11:51 (A review of Mirajane Strauss)

One of the few S-Class wizards in the Fairy Tail Guild, Mirajane Strauss is the “older-sister” of the Guild; she guides everyone with emotional support by acting as the backbone of kindness for the Guild. With her cheery composure and flawless appearance, she is definitely the apple of most Guild members’ eyes. However, don’t be fooled by her lax and caring attitude. The reason she’s an S-Class wizard is because of her devastating Satan Soul magic that can wreak havoc on anyone who dares to harm Guild members or more importantly, her close family.
