Goes down as One of My Favourite Comedies

Posted : 1 year, 4 months ago on 7 December 2022 08:57 (A review of What We Do in the Shadows (2014))

"What We Do in the Shadows" is a mockumentary about four vampires sharing a flat together.

Going into this movie knowing nothing but the above, I did not have any idea what to expect. What I got was one of the funniest movies of this year or any year for that matter. The jokes where brilliant and more importantly, they were frequent and consistently brilliant. I loved the interaction of the main characters with each other and the supporting characters.

Each of the main vampires had their moments and were all equally funny. The movie even had werewolves and they were also hilarious. I was also surprised by the special effects which were really well done.

At one point it did feel like the jokes were getting old, but just as I had finished that thought, the movie changes and ends brilliantly. Even though there isn't much of a story, it doesn't really matter for this movie. Just watching some of the hilarious chaos that ensues in their everyday life is enough.

There are not many movies that make me actually laugh out loud, but this one did on several occasions (usually comedies, even great ones, just keep me grinning through out). This is easily one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had at the cinema.

Best anime of 2016

Posted : 1 year, 4 months ago on 7 December 2022 08:45 (A review of My Hero Academia)

After exhausting all Naruto, one piece and bleach episodes, I was scrolling through similar anime when I stumbled on a 'certain my hero academia'

It sounded like another boring high school anime and the first 10 minutes of episode 1 did not look very convincing which prompted me to shut it off and keep searching for other shows. However, something kept gnawing away at my soul that wanted me to find out what happens next and 2 days later I continued to watch the first episode. By the time it ended episode 2 couldn't wait and subsequent episodes became too tantalizing I couldn't wait. This show starts slow but if you can just have a little patience and get to the 2nd or 3rd episode it just accelerates into a deluge of excitement.

Season 2 can't come early enough.

Laugh out loud funny!

Posted : 1 year, 4 months ago on 7 December 2022 08:42 (A review of What We Do in the Shadows)

What We Do in the Shadows is not only one of the funniest shows on tv right now but it has become one of my favorite comedies of all-time. It reminds me a little of Seinfeld in which every character on the show is as equally as funny as the others. It's hard to pick out the best and everyone has their own favorite. It's based on the film of the same name and is created by the same people, Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement. As funny as the movie was the show might be even better. It's one of the rare shows where every single episode is hilarious! There's nothing more I can really say except to go watch this show, I promise you'll love it!

My favourite musical to film adaptation

Posted : 1 year, 4 months ago on 7 December 2022 03:43 (A review of Matilda: The Musical)

For fans of the musical, this really doesn't disappoint. It is brilliantly staged, choreographed, performed and acted throughout. I loved every part of it. It is much closer to the original darkness of the Matilda book, so anyone expecting to see the lighthearted American version of the 90s will be disappointed. However, it is very true to the stage musical.

Tim Minchin's songs are clever and catchy, and are some of my most common earworms, so I was very glad to hear them done justice in this film. When I grow up never fails to put a tear in my eye, and it did it again in this film. I loved the addition of a new song at the end too, which fit in well with the others and provided a well-rounded ending.

Thoroughly recommend this for any fans already - it won't disappoint like many other musical to film adaptations.

Brutal delight

Posted : 1 year, 4 months ago on 7 December 2022 03:26 (A review of Violent Night)

Such a wonderful spin on a horror/comedy where Santa Claus is the hero! David Harbor is absolutely perfect for this role has the best voice and great thrill to see in anything he's in! To me this is one of the best Christmas movies out there along with Bad Santa. I would defiantly agree with anyone that loved Violent Night, it's a great mix of Home Alone, John Wick, and any horror Christmas movie. Tommy Wirkola directed a pure blast of entertainment! I sorta can see how it could get hate the family was a little obnoxious at times but I void that out cause everything else positive outweighs heaps.

A great retelling (and not a remake!)

Posted : 1 year, 4 months ago on 7 December 2022 03:11 (A review of Pinocchio)

From the get go, this movie had everything going for it. Guillermo del Toro knows how to make a good film, and this was definitely no exception. Now I'm a fan of the 1954 Pinocchio, and I'll say right off the bat that this is not a remake! Don't be foolish and think that, because this is an adaptation of the book more than anything. This movie took some creative liberties, some really good creative liberties, in fact. The movie is set during World War II, in an Italy under Mussolini. War plays a huge role in this film, and I think Del Toro did a good job of taking the basic ideas from the original story, and expanding on them. For example, a certain island setting from the original story is not present in this film, but in its place is a genius substitute that serves practically the same kind of purpose in a way. Every character is interesting and the worlds are very dense with details. While having a dark tone, the movie also finds a way to be upbeat and charming at times. Also, the music is great, the musical songs are pleasing to the ear. Best of all, the visuals are stunning, the puppets capture emotion even though they're puppets. This movie beats Disney's remake by a long shot, and I hope it gets lots of credit for that. Watch this movie if you like the story of Pinocchio, but expect differences and a darker tone. Your kids will like it, and you will love it. 10/10 totally recommend.

It surprised me

Posted : 1 year, 4 months ago on 7 December 2022 02:24 (A review of Devil May Cry)

Let me first say that the Devil May Cry Anime did not come out how I expected, though that is not necessarily a bad thing. I started out with VERY high hopes and they took a severe blow when I saw the preview episode. Like most fans who had been waiting for something like this I was worried that Dante had turned into your typical stock type protagonist. I disliked the addition of new characters which I initially found incredibly annoying and I felt that they had chosen wrong when finding a voice actor. (I think I am one of the few who was not perturbed by the lack of fight scenes).

All I can say is that I was wrong. The first few episodes followed a similar pattern, but a main plot began to emerge towards the second half of the series and the character development was nice. It was wonderful to see the return of old characters and interesting to see how Dante would interact with humans (the guitar case as a sheath for Rebellion was a nice touch).

Tha animation was beautiful and I loved the character design. The OST is awesome and the characters who I loathed in the first episode grew on me as did Dante's new personality.

My advice is if you're a die-hard fan you have to take the anime with a pinch of salt. Yes it's not perfect and there are many things they could have done to make it better, but it also has so many good qualities which you will over-look pointing out the bad things. Watch it with an open mind and be prepared for a light-hearted (though it does have its dark points) piece of good entertainment staring your favourite Demon Slayer.

SEE YOU AT THE GATES OF HELL

Posted : 1 year, 4 months ago on 7 December 2022 02:20 (A review of Bayonetta: Bloody Fate)

Warning: Spoilers
This is a film based on a video game. Seldom are the any good. This one takes two and half minutes of narration to explain the plot. The film combines various religious beliefs and portrays the power of light or goodness as being evil because they want to create a new world..at the expense of the old one. This is done by bringing together two eyes. Bayonetta has one of the eyes as well as a healthy case of amnesia after a 500 year sleep in a chained coffin at the bottom of a lake. She is our protagonist who kills angels in a film that blurs good and evil as a yin/yang.

Based on a video game, there is little to no plot as Bayonetta fights just about everyone and at time sacrifices her clothes to do so. She wears her hair in strategic places to prevent technical nudity of a cartoon, although the characters do drop the F-bomb.

If watching stacked cartoon characters fighting, this one has it.

Best Action game in years

Posted : 1 year, 4 months ago on 7 December 2022 02:15 (A review of Bayonetta)

I'm not usually one to play action games, more of an rpg fan, but there was something about this title that simply drew me in. Bayonetta isn't just another hottie with weapons, she knows how to use them and this game proves that over and over again.

I'll admit the plot is a bit simplistic. You are a witch who woke up at the bottom of the lake 20 years ago with no memories of your past, all you know is that every once in a while, angels try to send you to hell. Your henchman Enzo has located a rare gem that may clear up events of your past, so you set out on a journey to the island of Vigrid, a place filled with memories.

The cut scenes are over-the-top action-packed, and a little reminiscent of how Dante would roll in Devil May Cry. But Bayonetta actually makes it look good! Still, the best part is naturally the action. Combat has a very smooth flow to it that allows for a high number of combos with which to dispatch your angelic antagonists. Weapons ranging from simple handguns to claws, to swords, and even a whip, Bayonetta should have something in her repertoire for just about anyone. Not to mention, you can attach weapons to either your hands or feet in order to create some very unique combat combinations.

But don't be fooled, this isn't exactly a ride in the park either. The first play-through on normal is probably not that much of a challenge for anyone familiar with the genre, but that doesn't cover the extra content. There are portals to the angel's world all over the place with difficult challenges to complete, two harder difficulty modes, and several out-of-reach secrets that will require dexterity and acumen to discover. Best of all, almost everything you do has some manner of reward attached to it, so be prepared to spend a lot of hours on this.

All in all, I haven't had this much fun beating up things in a long time. The dialog is cheesy, the action is ridiculously bloody, and Bayonetta's boobs are way too huge for a human, but when put together this is a very potent combination. So put down DMC 4, forget about Dante's Inferno, get this game!

Greatest Anime

Posted : 1 year, 4 months ago on 7 December 2022 01:04 (A review of Attack on Titan)

Review By Kamal K

Story 10/10

It continunes few days after where we left off last season and it focuses more on political drama and dilemmas inside the walls. This season gets straight to the point and introduces new villain named Kenny that turns out to be somehow related to Levi. There are many parties trying to get Eren and Historia. For what reason? It is yet to be reveald. Mystery we all feel in love with is still there and there are even more questions, but don't let that distract you from the fact that this season ,even tho is only few episodes in, already has some major reveals in it. Pacing is amazing and i wasn't bored for a moment while watching. Things are only getting more interesting when Erwin reveals how he's planning to ovethrow the governmant without using the force. This season has a very refreshing and different plot compared to previous ones as we can see from the lack of titans and focuse on the issues inside the walls rather than beyond. However it's still as, if not more interesting than before. There is world buidling, mystery, back stabbing and some major questions answered which there is hopfully more to come.

Animation 10/10

As we can see characters in this season look a little bit different or older which some might not like but i do personally. It's a fresh change. They look closer to their manga designes. Some might notice that they removed those thick black lines around characters faces which made AOT art stand out even more. Don't get me wrong, it still does but that was something that was missing which kept me from giving it 10/10. Animation is brilliant for this season (it's Attack on Titan after all :D) and like every season it only got better. . Perfect combination between 3D background and 2D animation along with masterfull camera movement made this scene look like a movie. There is even one frame where levi is facing the wall and you can see his reflection in the window. Just goes to show how much detail and time was put in to this scene. After i done some research i found out that it took the animator of this scene 1 whole month to complete it. Just that one scene alone. All props to Arifumi Imai. Great job. Hopfully it keeps this quality because this season is said to be 24 episodes long.

Sound 10/10

I mean, is there anything to say? AoT is notorious for it's amazing OST and sound quality. Voice actors are great as always and the sound that stand out to me the most was the sound of falling shell from kenny on the roof in ep.1. It was just so satisfying :D. And again mad props to Hiroyuki Sawano (the composer) for the epic and emotional music.

Characters 10/10

What i like about AoT characters is the fact that they interact so naturally and nothing from their conversation seems forced which is immediately showcased in the very first scene in ep. 1. That cabin scene where jean and eren argue, sasha tries to steal bread, mikasa still does work even tho she's injured and armin cares for her deeply. And of course Levi the clean freak comes in at the end :p They are such fun and lively characters. This season already had some major development for our cast. We got to see Erwin's and Hisotira's backstories which also delved deeper in their characters motives. Both backstories were heartbreaking and made me care a lot more for them. Hisotira is slowly taking of her "Christa Lenz" facade (is that how you say it? lol) and Erwin is proving again and again why everyone loves him and would follow him to death. His childhood story is very similar to how our society and governmant wokrs today which is very scary. And we all need to remember that isayama is criticizing this type of government and society with these topics. Instead of just walking of Erwin comes back to Dimo Rivees's wife and comforts her saying he'll avange him. Erwin is charismatic, great leader, intellignet and someone that you just want to follow. Since the young age he was corious and as he call himself a "gambler". He is someone that would give everything for the humanity. Or is he? I think there is a lot more to his character. Hange got some development too. Eren is maturing and seems a lot more chill this season but unfortunately he is kiddnaped again :( Poor guy he just can't catch a break. In ep.1 he helps historia to overcome here pain and shows again just how honest he is by telling her "I like you more this way, just a stupidly normal honest girl". Also hugeee development for armin. To think that he would be capable of killing a human.. this will deffinitely have a huge impact on his character in the future. The way he selfreflects and his philosohpical speach about morals is great, it really makes you think. He kinda has a point too. He shows one more time how mentally strong he is even tho he lacks physicial strength. This time is just on another level. Now lets talk about our new villain. KENYYYYYYYYYYY. I love this guy lol. The way he roasts and insults levi and the cowboy vibe he gives. I love it. He immediately showcases that he is not a joke by blowing nifa's head off just like that. He also seems very mysterious. The way he treats levi is almost as if he looks down upon him. Speaking of Levi here is what i think: That chase scene where he's running away from kenny is not just a great action sequence it also represents Levi running from his past. Kenny=His past. Running from kenny or his past. This arc is also big development and challange for him now that he has to act as a leader/commander because erwin is absent or busy. There was also some smaller developments for connie (motivating himself to take on the beast titan),jean (struggling to remain human which almost costs him life, also selfreflecting), sanes (showing how he didn't want to do the things that he has done and over the time he just got used to it, also he was kinda easy to symphatise with too and his devotion to king is may be morally wrong but aslo admirable, the way he feels destroyed after finding out that he was actually the one that betrayed the king is also worth mentioning), flegel (stepping up becoming a boss saying how he'll protect the people of his city), zachary (showcasing that he cares more about himself rather than humanity and how he always hated the governmant because they looked up on everyone).

Enjoyment 10/10

I never enjoyed AoT more. It's great. This season has perfect balance between story telling, character development and action.

Overall 10/10
