Disappointing, but does have its merits

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 19 November 2022 01:09 (A review of The Smurfs)

I am a big fan of The Smurfs, so I was all for seeing this movie, though I was dubious as well. The Smurfs does have its merits, but is rather disappointing too. I will talk about the merits first, while not outstanding the 3D is quite good(I've seen far worse), Hank Azaria is perfect as Gargamel, Jonathan Winters successfully manages to make Papa Smurf the most lively of all the smurfs and Neil Patrick Harris gives a comedic grace to an otherwise banal role. Feelings on the music were mixed, nice and jaunty but forgettable soon after. The editing could have been tighter also. What I didn't like so much about the film was the predictable and rather thin story, the clumsy writing and jokes(including one inappropriate Marilyn Monroe allusion), the rushed pace and that apart from Papa, Gargamel and perhaps Smurfette(though I wasn't entirely sure whether I liked Katy Perry or not, my guess is sometimes yes sometimes no, and I liked how they explained why there was one female smurf character) the characters aren't developed enough or given enough personality to make them properly interesting. In conclusion, has its merits but not recommended. 4/10 Bethany Cox

10. Setsuna Tokage

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 18 November 2022 07:27 (A review of Setsuna Tokage)

Hero Name: Lizardy

Quirk: Lizard Tail Splitter

Setsuna Tokage is one of the students in Class B and was first introduced in the season 5 of the series. Despite of being in Class B, Setsuna Tokage is one of the most reliable students in her class next to Itsuka Kendo, the leader of Class B.

Setsuna is a confident and has a good leadership, especially when it comes to strategize, just like what she did when they fought Class A. Setsuna doesn’t have a deadly quirk like Bakugou or Todoroki, yet her quirk is reliable on its own way. Having a quirk similar to a lizard, Setsuna could split herself into 50 tiny pieces without losing its senses, making it good for scouting especially, it grants her an ability to levitate for a great height.

Regardless of having a late introduction in the series, Setsuna Tokage love by a lot of fans in spite of having only a short screentime. Setsuna doesn’t just have a good quirk but also have a sharp intellect when it comes to fighting situation.

Don Bluth's Masterpiece!

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 17 November 2022 08:50 (A review of The Secret of NIMH (1982))

I will confess I saw this for the first time today on YouTube, and I loved it. I always said that Anastasia and American Tail were the best of Bluth's movies, but I now think that this beats them both. The story is very dark and mysterious but magical all the same. The animation is just stunning, with beautiful backgrounds and excellent character animation. Brutus is a little frightening though, or his animation is, so is the scene with the great owl, which is inredibly haunting. The music by the wonderful late Jerry Goldsmith is phenomenal, very reminiscent of his score for the Eurpean version for Legend (the Ridley Scott film). The song I think it's called Flying Dreams is heart-rending, and just shows the talent the man had, and I am grateful that there weren't too many songs to interrupt the flow. The characters are very well done, the brave yet timid Mrs Brisby, the dashing Justin, the villainous Jenner, the wise Nicodemus and the wise-cracking Jeremy. Nicodemus and Jeremy are very impressive, voiced wonderfully by Derek Jacobi and Dom Deluise, and Jenner while not as sinister and frightening a villain as Hexxus, Chernabog or the Horned King, he is still very convincing. Oh, and the scenes with Mrs Brisby's children and Auntie Shrew brought some fun into a dark story, and didn't interfere too much, and Elizabeth Hartmann gives a sorrowful and poignant portrayal as Mrs Brisby. I haven't read the book in its entirety, but I do remember my year 6 primary school teacher reading the chapter when Mrs Brisby(or Frisby in the book) meets Brutus for the first time. All in all, a beautiful film, and I am sorry it has taken me so long to see it. I advice you to avoid the sequel though, it's awful. 10/10 Bethany Cox

4. Wall-E

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 17 November 2022 08:09 (A review of WALL-E)

Movie(s): Wall-E (2008)

First Appearance: Cameo in Cars (2006)

Voiced by: Ben Burtt

Proof, if proof were needed, that strong silent types are infinitely preferable to their chattier counterparts, Wall-E is an almost-mute waste-shifting robot who is easily the most adorable automaton ever created. With R2D2 genius Ben Burtt giving him a voice comprised chiefly of exclamations, hums and snippets of the Hello Dolly soundtrack. Combined with Pixar's genius for creating character with the twitch of an eye-shade, and you have someone who won audience hearts in about ten seconds flat, despite being rusty and rickety and probably smelling of trash. No mean feat for a guy who hangs out with a cockroach.

Stroke of genius

As Wall-E files away his newly acquired items after his shift one day, he hesitates over a spork should it go with his spoon collection or his forks? Finally, he decides to place it inbetween the two. Adorable!

Fun fact

In the tradition of Pixar hiding clues to their upcoming films in new releases, Wall-E appears in the background of one shot in Cars, and in 2D, handdrawn animated form on the Ratatouille DVD, driving a bus in the short film Our Friend the Rat.

8. The Iron Giant

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 17 November 2022 07:58 (A review of The Iron Giant)

Movies: The Iron Giant (1999)

First Appearance: The Iron Giant (1999)

Voiced by: Vin Diesel

If you're not quite sure why everyone's looking forward to Brad Bird's take on Mission: Impossible IV, check out this beautiful and moving adaptation of Ted Hughes' already-powerful children's book. Bird's film may have sunk without a trace at the box office, but it's one of the great animated films, a tale of friendship, tolerance and fear for the ages. The Iron Giant himself, voiced with surprisingly delicacy by Vin Diesel, manages to be by turns mysterious, childlike, warlike and heroic. His final decision to emulate his comic-book hero, Superman, will break your heart.

Stroke of genius

The devastatingly emotional last act. Remember the first time you watched ET and he went home at the end and you cried all the way home from the cinema? It's like that.

Fun fact

Even though this is a traditionally 2D animated film, the Iron Giant himself is entirely computer generated. They just added a slight wobble to his lines to make him look handdrawn and help him to fit in with the other kids characters.
