Incredibly silly but a good effort

Posted : 2 years, 4 months ago on 21 August 2022 08:32 (A review of Freddy vs Ghostbusters)

You could criticize Freddy vs Ghostbusters for being amateurish, but that would be missing the point. Hank Braxton did a wonderful job with the material and pays loving tribute to both franchises. To be fair though, it's mainly a Ghostbusters film.

The plot has Freddy tormenting the dreams of Denver kids again until the nephew of Egon Spengler turns up in town with his Ghostbuster Jnr. pal. After busting a nasty poltergeist in a bar they make it big in Colorado (a brilliant montage follows) and decide to investigate the rumors of Freddy Kruger. Will they be able to bust the dream demon once and for all? Watch and find out.

The only thing that really bugged me was the fact that the cinematography is far too static. Movies are supposed to move and too often the stillness of the scenes frustrated me and my attention wandered. It's really the only thing I can complain about. The actors were great and although they weren't hardcore professionals they still made me laugh.

Outstanding prequel to the '84 horror classic

Posted : 2 years, 4 months ago on 21 August 2022 08:25 (A review of Krueger (A Tale from Elm Street))

Warning: Spoilers
After claiming his latest victim (a brief, but memorable appearance by the adorable Gracie De La Rosa), vicious Springfield Slasher Freddy Krueger (superbly played with chilling menace and relish by Roberto Lombardi) gets arrested for a horrific rash of brutal child killings. Determined Lt. Donald Thompson (an excellent portrayal by Shawn Parr) tries to get a written confession out of Krueger, but gets more than he bargained for when he interrogates the unrepentant fiend. Do-It-Yourself indie auteur Chris R. Notarile handles this gripping short in his usual crisp and straightforward manner: There's no needless padding or filler to speak of, the brisk pace never flags for a second, and a tremendous amount of tension is well created and sustained throughout despite the fact that the bulk of the picture takes place in a single claustrophobic police station room. However, Notarile's key artistic triumph here is his presentation of Krueger as an absolute monster: Vile, boastful, and arrogant, this Freddy is an utterly hateful, revolting, and above all frightening pedophile and murderer who's the stuff of true nightmares. The sterling acting from the two first-rate leads rates as another substantial asset: Lombardi looks and sounds just like a young Robert Englund while Parr bears an uncanny resemblance to an early 70's era John Saxon complete with sideburns. Notarile's polished cinematography offers a few nice black and white surveillance camera shots that add a nifty stylistic flourish to the proceedings. The use of Charles Bernstein's shuddery original score is a sound and effective choice as well. Highly recommended.

Maze Master

Posted : 2 years, 4 months ago on 21 August 2022 08:04 (A review of Ms. Pac-Man)

This is another one of my favorite video games of all time and this game for the record is one that came out on my birth year which makes it all the cooler. Much like with the "Empire Strikes Back" this game was not just one of the first sequels in video games ever but also one of the first truly great sequels in video game ever.

This game is a childhood gem, as it was one of the first video games I've every played when I was six years old, I'll admit at first, I wasn't very good but as I played on I got better and just fell in love with it. But also I love mazes their my favorite kind of puzzles, it was the first kind of puzzle I did when I was little and to this day I still do them, there is always something fascinating about its architecture but also gives you a sense of satisfaction or completeness being able to go though and find your way from point A to B; just looking at how far you gone and what you've done to get to the finish is even more fascinating that getting there at all. This game is truly a timeless classic as to this day there is almost not one place that I don't see this game in, even in the most sophisticated video arcades like "Dave and Busters" , conventions, you name it like any great classic well known film or literary novel it's there to stay.

Not much to say, it's the same game mechanics as the original Pac-Man are the same but with a few details that really elevate this up from its predecessor. As much as I liked the first Pac-Man game it was a tad redundant because of the fact you ran the same maze over an over again what really changed was the speed and chase formation patterns of the Ghosts. This game still has that however there are significant improvements.

For one thing there are different mazes which make it great and more challenging. I really love that aspect because it really keeps the game fresh and interesting. These mazes are just as much the star as the characters themselves. I really love the design as they are unique in both color and arrangement. When you have a go around on a certain maze twice your pretty much use to it, but once you get onto a whole different maze it causes you to adapt quickly, new maze means new rules.

I really like that your character is a little faster making the control and gameplay a little more fluid. I also like that the fruit you always try to chomp down on is moving which makes you chances of getting it a little better, but you still must get it before it reaches the other side. I even like the cut scenes which tell a story, it's a basic simple romance story on how both Ms. Pac Man and Pac Man had a relationship. It's nothing much but all the same it was an actually story, which is part of what makes the game revolutionary and a first and rare as it's been unheard of video games having cut scenes telling an ongoing story as you play; it was defiantly before games like "Ninja Gaiden" series for the NES, "Mass Effect" franchise, and many more thought the years.

Ms. Pac Man is a timeless classic that is still up to speed.

This game Rocks!

Posted : 2 years, 4 months ago on 21 August 2022 07:35 (A review of Pac-Man Vs. / Pac-Man World 2)

Warning: Spoilers
This game is probably one of the best classic games I have ever played. It takes place in many different "worlds" and it even has some of the classic characters in it. And what will a pac man game be without the Original ONE.

In the game you can collect tokens that allow you to play the original pac man games which is pretty cool lol so I say should should buy this game for sure, it is a platinum hit so it is probably under $20 right now if you can find it

So what are you waiting for buy the game it is a game for the whole family

Maze Runner

Posted : 2 years, 4 months ago on 21 August 2022 07:28 (A review of Pac-Man)

This is the game that started it all, it truly was the first in video game franchises, icons, and just everything, without this little guy we wouldn't be where we are now. "Pac Man" was more than just a game, it was a phenomenon as it has become a staple in the 80's decade.

This guy just like in the maze was just everywhere and going places, there was a board game which was fun, a cartoon show from Hana Barbara which was also fun, multiple video game ports, the old VDF color handhelds from the 80's, stand alone games "Pac Man Championship Edition 1 and 2". He even referenced in the visual media, "The Simpsons", "Tiny Toon Adventures", "Futurama" and featured in the underrated film "Pixels" to this day there is almost not one place without an arcade cabinet of this game.

I mainly got into the Pac Man series playing ports of the game and after those I was hooked on the game franchise for life. It's such a simple concept where it's basically just a chase in a maze, but this simple concept turned out to be the most brilliant. Though also kind of strange as you are simply cute flying or floating yellow head that is constantly moving chomping a bunch of dots that are point rackers. And you are chased by multicolored ghosts, each of them with different speeds and go all kinds of directions.

Yeah strange but fun and they are characters in video games after all it doesn't mean they have to be realistic or even human. This is also by it's nature a scoring game as you play the same maze over and over but as you get further the game gets a little more difficult as the ghosts get a little faster and change their maneuvering patterns. Anyway, the concept and gameplay is simple and yet there is a lot to it. What I like about this and the other Pac-Man games is the fact that you use your head to beat your ghost opponents.

The overview design of the maze is finely designed, the fact you can see overhead put you a step ahead of them because you'll be able to know when the ghosts are heading your way and with that brief knowledge being prepared to outmaneuver and even hide from them. Really like those warp holes, which not just take you to the other side of the maze but can slow the ghost's momentum which give you time to get away.

Then of course you have the power pellets which I always love which always give you home court advantage where you powered up and are able to give the ghost the chomp down as they all turn blue and in a sick state and are just moving as slow as zombies making them easy targets. But of course, this only last briefly, there is a risk reward factor because you really don't want to be around when they change back color.

There is also the fruit that always appears in the middle of the screen next to the base, it's pretty much extra credit as you gain a few more points eating them. But even that has a risk reward factor as the fruit only appears briefly and the ghosts move to the middle sometimes as well, so get it while you can. Even like how after a series of levels there a little cut scene is even, which is basically a skit comedy and I thought those were really cool even like that frantic music, sort of your halftime show only it's actually good.

Overall, a solid start to the series thought personally this ranks number five on my list in the series as I like the sequels even more as they have a little more to them much like how I feel about the "Friday the 13th" franchise, but that's me. For old and young games this is a timeless classic that continues to chomp into our hearts.

10. Queen Anora (Dragon Age)

Posted : 2 years, 4 months ago on 20 August 2022 09:01 (A review of Queen Anora Theirin)

English voice actor: Mika Simmons
Game's year of release: 2009–2014
Company: BioWare

Anora is the sophisticated and lovely queen of Fereldan, the daughter of Teyrn Loghain and a strong ruler. It is possible to marry her in Dragon Age: Origins and become the king of Fereldan if you play as a non-mage human male!

She also makes an appearance in Dragon Age: Inquisition if you gain the mages' support and the correct backstory is selected. Anora's diplomacy and regal beauty are what makes her one of my top ten favorite video game ladies.

12. Kainé (NieR)

Posted : 2 years, 4 months ago on 20 August 2022 08:56 (A review of Kainé)

English voice actor: Laura Bailey
Game's year of release: 2010
Company: Square Enix

Kainé is one of those characters you never forget. As well as insane fighting skills and a ridiculously sexy outfit only Square Enix could create, Kainé swears like a sailor and has a hot temper to match, yet is endearing and has a solid backstory that explains why she is how she is.

Kainé is one of my favorite characters from any game, ever. NieR: Gestalt and NieR: Replicant remain incredibly underrated games for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, respectively.

13. Lulu (Final Fantasy X)

English voice actor: Paula Tiso
Game's year of release: 2001
Company: Square Enix

What is it about grumpy girls? This rather pessimistic yet wise mage is undoubtedly the hottest character in Final Fantasy X and she knows it. Purple nails, a low-cut dress, and an all-around gothic influence on her look made her one of many people's childhood crushes.
