One of my favourite shows from my childhood

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 4 June 2022 05:41 (A review of Goof Troop)

I have always loved Disney. Goof Troop is wonderful, and one of my favourite shows of theirs alongside Darkwing Duck, Talespin and DuckTales.

The animation often has a crisp and smooth quality with the backgrounds and is also very colourful. The music is hip and cool as well with one of the most memorable theme tunes of any 90s cartoon show, the story lines always engage and the writing never fails to be hilarious, in fact I consider Goof Troop to be one of Disney's funniest shows.

Wonderful characters too. Goofy is still clumsy and lovable, Max never fell into the trap of being overly-cutesy or bland and Pete is often a character you love to hate. The voice acting is consistently great, Bill Farmer has some inspired delivery as he always does and Jim Cummings's Pete adds to the long list of his best voice roles.

Overall, wonderful. 10/10 Bethany Cox

Another great TV show that was unfairly cancelled.

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 4 June 2022 05:38 (A review of Darkwing Duck)

This and Talespin are absolutely great, as are the Little Mermaid and Aladdin TV series, but now they are unfairly cancelled. This is one of the few shows with wit, great detailed animation, memorable characters, and truly diabolical villains in a good sense. The pilot episodes were among the best, with the devious and calculating Taurus Bulba (none other than the god of voice acting Tim Curry) but there are other great villains like NegaDuck and Megavolt. If I had a personal favourite villain, I'd go for NegaDuck. The title characters are wonderful, especially Darkwing(brilliantly voiced by Jim Cummings) and his silly catchphrases. Launchpad is hilarious in every episode, and you have got to love Gossalyn. Along with Peter Pan and the Pirates, there should be a petition to bring these shows back!Find this show on YouTube and watch it! 9/10. Bethany Cox PS. The theme tune is amongst the catchiest theme tunes in any show I have seen.

How I miss the '80s and '90s...

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 4 June 2022 05:30 (A review of Animaniacs)

Nowadays, cartoons are either bad(Shaggy and Scooby Doo:Get a Clue) or good shows now mediocre(Pokemon and Spongebob Squarepants). At 17, I adore Animaniacs, it is a very funny and witty show. Although Disney silly Symphonies, Hanna Barbera and Looney Tunes had their fair share of classics, I feel that the best shows came from the late '80s and early '90s, naturally the ones that shaped my childhood. Where are shows like Animaniacs, Darkwing Duck, Talespin, Peter Pan and the Pirates, DuckTales, Batman:The Animated Series, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Adventures of the Gummi Bears, Sonic the Hedgehog, The Little Mermaid, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Pinky and the Brain and Pirates of Dark Water when you need them?

Back to Animaniacs, the show is very well animated, with vibrant colouring, crisp beautiful backgrounds and convincing movements for the characters. The music is not only catchy, it is actually memorable as well, and I constantly find myself humming it wherever I go. The scripts and humour are witty and hilarious, as are the situations no matter how silly they are the characters get into. This all springs from a great concept, some shows have a great concept but don't live up to it, Animaniacs does and superbly might I add, with story lines that are funny, touching and endearing. The characters are immensely likable with unique personalities, Wakko, Dot, Yakko, Minerva, Slappy, Skippy, Rita, Runt, Flavio, Marita and of course Pinky and the Brain. And these endearing characters are brilliantly voiced by the likes of Rob Paulson, Tress MacNeille, Jess Harnell, Frank Welker and Maurice LeMarche.

Overall, this is a superb animated show, that is not only for kids but for adults as well. 10/10 Bethany Cox

Funny, smart and somewhat cute too- a must see!

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 4 June 2022 05:27 (A review of Tiny Toon Adventures)

I have been a huge Looney Tunes fan all my life, and when I first heard there was a spin-off series three years ago I knew yes I must see this. Then I told myself if it is anything like Animaniacs or Pinky and the Brain, two of the best animated shows ever made, then I was in for a treat.

Tiny Toon Adventures is simply brilliant, it has a great concept and works brilliantly with it. The animation is beautiful and crisp, with bright colourful backgrounds, beautiful colours and well drawn characters, while the theme tune is catchy, hip and memorable, a definite bonus when it comes to animated shows. And I have to say the incidental music is also very cleverly composed.

Another strong component is the humour. It works so well, I was surprised how funny and smart it was. Animaniacs was funny and smart, so was Pinky and the Brain, so was the Flintstones and so was even the original Looney Tunes cartoons themselves. And I have to admit there was some humour that went over my head first time but now after seeing each episode 5 plus times it clicked. I try to tell myself, if you don't get something first time, try it again until you do. I loved the quick wit, the slapstick, the wackiness and the imitations and I still do. Then there are the story lines, there was a real danger of it all being predictable and clichรฉd, but the writers cleverly avoided this by constructing some simple but easy to understand adventures that appeal to both kids and adults.

And the characters? They are wonderful. They are basically hip and younger versions of the Looney Tunes characters, with distinct personalities that perfectly convey the time in which the show is set. Buster and Babs are the two main characters, and I also love Plucky, Furball, Hamton and Dizzy. I even liked Elmyra, I found her obnoxious in Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain(the wretched spin-off of Pinky and the Brain) but I think it was to do with the concept not working and how the character was written. She can be bratty at times admittedly, but she does have her good moments. The voice acting is simply faultless, with Rob Paulson, Maurice LaMarche, Don Messick, Cree Summer, Joe Alaskey and especially Tress MacNeille absolutely brilliant consistently.

Overall, if you love animated shows or animation in general, or good humour, well written stories or likable characters, I think you've found your match with Tiny Toon Adventures. 10/10 Bethany Cox

Great cartoon fun with our favourite woodpecker!

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 4 June 2022 05:25 (A review of The Woody Woodpecker Show)

I absolutely love this show, it is such a lot of fun. It is a real shame though you don't see it very much on TV if at all. Like Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo, Flintstones, Tom and Jerry and TopCat, plus numerous cartoons from the 80s and 90s like DangerMouse, Count Duckula, DuckTales, Talespin and Darkwing Duck, this was a show I refused to miss. I loved the characters, the detail of the animation, the music, everything. There may be some episodes with rather hectic pacing, but hey so did some of the Tom and Jerry cartoons and they were still a lot of fun regardless. The animation is very detailed, with crisp backgrounds especially, and the music was a lot of fun. So were the characters, you have to love Woody and Wally was hilarious. Plus, the stories were interesting, and most importantly, it was funny! Overall, this is a great show. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Hey, hey, hey!

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 4 June 2022 05:20 (A review of The Yogi Bear Show)

The Yogi Bear Show is not my absolute favourite of the Hanna-Barbera shows; I think Scooby Doo Where are You? and The Flintstones are better, but this is still a very funny and smart show. The animation is crisp, colourful and smooth, and the music is really infectious with a theme tune that sticks firmly in your head for ages afterwards. The story lines are interesting and exciting, the writing like the show is funny and smart and the gags are inspired. I love the characters, lovable Yogi, Snagglepuss, Boo Boo, Yakky Doodle, Chopper, Cindy Bear and Fibber Fox, they are all great and likable. They are all well voiced by a truly terrific voice cast, Daws Butler, Don Messick, June Foray and Mel Blanc all to name a few. Overall, hey, hey, hey, this is a very entertaining show. Look out for it! 9/10 Bethany Cox

Funny and incredibly smart

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 4 June 2022 05:17 (A review of The Flintstones)

I grew up on shows like Scooby Doo and Tom Jerry and this is no exception. I love the Flintstones:- it is funny and incredibly smart, and at 17 I can still watch it and there is very seldom a dull moment. What makes it great? Well, the detailed and colourful animation contributes hugely. Also the theme tune, has to be one of the most catchy theme tunes on any animated TV show. Then there's the humour, the whole show is constantly funny and is guaranteed to have you chuckling away. Finally we have the characters. Fred is one zany cartoon, and Alan Reed was the perfect choice for him. Another hilarious character, perhaps even more so than Fred is Barney, who is quite goofy yet completely lovable. Who'd better to voice him than the immortal Mel Blanc? Then we have Wilma, who is a great sexy female character and wonderfully voiced by Jean Vader Pyl. Plus the voluptuous Betty, voiced to perfection by Bea Benaderet. The writing constantly is incredibly witty, sharp and smart, the story lines are outstanding and the supporting characters namely the hilarious Mr Slate and cute as a button Pearl are just as great. All in all, I loved this when I was a kid, and as a near-adult I still love it. Adults will enjoy it as well as kids. 10/10 Bethany Cox

Smurfs- gotta love 'em!

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 4 June 2022 05:15 (A review of Smurfs)

I used to watch "Smurfs" every day as a kid, and at 18 I remember the show with such fondness. It is a real shame I haven't seen Smurfs on TV for such a long time, it was a cartoon classic. It had great animation with nice, clean colouring and well drawn characters, a catchy theme tune and clever background music, fun, gripping story lines that often taught something, strong writing and most of all unique and endearing characters. Who can forget Papa Smurf, Handy, Clumsy, Smurfette, Greedy, Smurfy, Vanity and Baby? And of course villainous Gargamel and his somewhat cute feline sidekick Azrael? These are great characters and are well voiced by the likes of June Foray, Don Messick, Frank Welker, Alan Oppenheimer, Alan Young and Lucille Bliss. Overall, a cartoon that I will always revere as a classic. 10/10 Bethany Cox

A cartoon classic for everyone!

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 4 June 2022 05:12 (A review of Garfield and Friends)

"Garfield and Friends" is a great show, based on a great comic strip. I just loved how funny, creative and original it was. If I had a disappointment though, and this has been mentioned by many other reviewers, I didn't think the "US Acres" (or "Orson's Farm") segments were as witty or as fun. But there were some fun characters, Wade the Duck was my favourite, and there have been some good moments. But everything else is first rate. The cartoon animation is wonderful, really nice to look at and very colourful. The theme tune is wonderful, and hummable even after a long time. And I love the characters, the lazy Garfield, adorable mischievous Oadie, narcissistic Nermal and goofy Binky The Clown. And the voice work was superb, Lorenzo Music(R.I.P) owned the character of Garfield and part of the reason why I love the show so much. The scripts are dry and witty, full of hilarious asides uttered by Garfield mostly, and the story lines are a lot of fun. In conclusion, this is a great cartoon classic, with something for everyone! 9/10 Bethany Cox

Yet another childhood favourite that holds up well

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 4 June 2022 04:56 (A review of Muppet Babies)

I adored this show as a kid. I thought it was affectionate and funny, with great educational value and fun characters. Re-visiting it, this childhood favourite still holds up. I love anything to do with the Muppets, their show, their movies, their humour, their personalities, seeing them as babies was a great idea and worked superbly. The animation was colourful and clean, and the music is cleverly composed. The stories and episode ideas were always so well thought out, while the writing was delightful consistently. Likewise with the characters, even as cute babies they are as endearing and as likable as the ones from the show and movies we know and love, and the voice acting is spot on. I also loved the educational value, Muppet Babies taught some great lessons simply and effectively in a way that appeals to kids and adults. In conclusion, it was a wonderful show, and still holds a special place in my heart. 10/10 Bethany Cox
