An intense story driven game

Posted : 2 years, 6 months ago on 6 July 2022 08:30 (A review of Fatal Frame III: The Tormented)

First let me start off by saying that I love the Fatal Frame series. It's one of the best survival horror series in my opinion. There's hardly anything bad I can think of to say about the series.

The third game follows the same basic structure of the last two games. You fight ghost with a camera. There's not been much of an upgrade from the past two games in terms of game play. Which may aggravate some veteran Fatal Frame players.

The story is of a young woman named Rei Kurosawa who lost her boyfriend some time ago and is a freelance photographer. She currently is now trying to solve the mystery of the cursed tattoo and the manor of sleep. The story is as always beautifully crafted and finishes out the trilogy on the PS2 with a bang.

You'll be going back and forth in between a "dream manor" and the waking world. Which is Rei's apartment. The transition is done very nicely and pulled off in such a way that it doesn't take away from the story.

There are two other characters in this game. Kei Amakura and Miku Hinisaka from the first game. They serve their purpose well as this game eventually ties into the past two games. You'll actually be seeing a lot of Miku.

The graphics are the best they've ever been in this game. The locations look great as does the characters. The voice acting is great, but the characters do sound like they're talking in a hole sometimes. The sound for all the ghost is great and intense.

I wouldn't say this is the scariest out of the three as anyone who has played the past two games will likely be desensitized to the whole ghost fighting formula of the series. That still doesn't take away from the game in my opinion. It holds its own.

A few words to sum up the whole game is it's a beautiful intense game. I recommend the whole series for anyone who is into survival horror and looking for a deep psychological game.

Just really mediocre

Posted : 2 years, 6 months ago on 6 July 2022 08:27 (A review of Haunting Ground)

Well made game, but it gets so boring and repetitive. You just want it to be over. Ending isn't rewarding at all either. I believe I got the best one. And it made me wish I would have gotten the worst one, because from what I've read, it seems like the most interesting one.

Bad Homecoming

Posted : 2 years, 6 months ago on 6 July 2022 08:24 (A review of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)

This is my third favorite game in the series (well for now anyway till the next good volume), once again the franchise has taken a new road once more which I always felt was the strength of the franchise because as time goes on one gameplay approach they've used for so long starts to get really old and loses something along the way. This was a great choice because it brought something crucial to the series back actually being scary.

The gameplay is great this time it's more first-person perspective however this isn't the typical gun in front approach. There is action but this game is one where your more focused not just on fighting but on surviving and investigating at the same time. You do collect the usual weapons and medicine along the way but remember most of the time the supplies are a distance from each other and depending on the area you in can be a little scarce sometimes, so you need to pick your fights and shots carefully. I do like the boss and mini boss battles as each are always different like fighting each of the nasty family members from the mom that looks like Henrietta form "Evil Dead 2" and the husband whom becomes a nasty eye monster, the battle have a moderate difficulty to them and I like that there each different which keeps the action interesting but also causes you to adjust your tactics in defeating them.

However, to me what really powers the game is in the developing story/mystery along with just the horror element itself. I really love the graphical presentation which is just dark grotesque beauty all around. I like the fact that it takes place in some swampy area which is a perfect arena for horror, I always felt the swamp land at night was always spooky because you never really know what else is in that swamp but also it very dangerous to venture at that time. Really like the looks from the swamp land down to the run-down house that looks like Leatherface's pad. From how detailed everything is it's just palpable you just feel the grit, dirt, grim, cold, and dampness, it almost make them game at time feel a bit similar to a Giallo horror film because the house and even the swampland you go out to just emits a oppressive, disorienting, evil atmosphere that you feel is completely against you. The music is great it is just memorable as it just sings intensity and evil throughout the game, I even like that there is a little strangeness to it including the theme song this just once again adds to the game as the game is disorienting, everything were familiar with has gone out the window and nothing is ever what it seems.

Even like the designs of the monsters, these are different this time as their not zombies but mutants. Which that's cool and it's true to the title as it's called "Resident Evil" which doesn't just mean zombies. These mutants I thought were a great change of pace and were good opponents as you have some nasty black mold monsters that emerge, that look almost like the Rot monsters from the "Swamp Thing" comics or the tar zombie from "Return of the Living Dead". But of course, the most memorable are the Mutant Family themselves who are the ones to watch out for the most, they are just so upright looking from how grey and white their skin as if they have some sort of skin pigmentation disease down to their eyes which just are yellow and convey cruelty and evil.

The suspense is great as you are constantly on high alert even in the quiet bits because you feel that danger can come at any moment and it usual does, which is why you can't afford to let up for one moment. I remember constantly hoping my weapons are loaded but also in some of the places I've never ventured to walk carefully as something could either be hidden in the next room or even pop out. I'm even also trying to thoroughly map out the room and environment in my head so that if there are certain situation were, I can't fight or can avoid it, I would remember where the next door and hiding spots are, which is crucial to surviving.

I really love the mystery throughout the whole game, throughout the game I'm constantly wondering who the heck the main character and his wife really are, what the hell is going on, is she or is she not connected with this mutant family, is what's happening connected with Umbrella or not, the answers slowly but surely reveal themselves making everything fall into place and the story much clearer.

The characterization is also supposing really good from our opponents the mutant family the Bakers whom are just a detestable bunch you just plain hate, from their nasty behavior, sick mockery toward the main character you play and your wife, just the more we learn about them the more you just want to put them in their place which is Hell. It's gratifying doing it, one I defeat one of them I'm thinking "One Down." Just a moment of bad assness. But also, this family is the one with a few of the keys to the mystery which once again adds to the intrigue and story.

But I most of all like the characterization of the main character and the wife, the more you see what they go though but also uncover certain bits of depth between the two the more I actually sympathized with them and wanted both to survive and win; also their depth also are keys to the mystery so that also motived me to win as I wanted to solve it.

"Resident Evil 7" is a welcome return to form and worth entering if you dare.

Rating: 4 stars

12. Crocodile

Posted : 2 years, 6 months ago on 6 July 2022 05:53 (A review of Crocodile)

Anime:Ā One Piece

Crocodile justĀ [Link removed - login to see]Ā and looks like the perfect blend between an old-school pirate and the more modern criminal.

He has this Mafioso aesthetic with his giant coat and a cigar so big it attacks your lungs (yes you, the viewer).

But then he reveals a giant golden hook hand, and youā€™re right back among the pirates.

The dude is iconic in the show, being how long he has remained somewhat relevant and the fact that he was the first to hand Luffy a giant L.

14. Emeraldas

Posted : 2 years, 6 months ago on 6 July 2022 05:49 (A review of Emeraldas)

Anime:Ā Queen Emeraldas

So far females have just been killing this list, havenā€™t they?

And Emeraldas is no different.

Sheā€™s a galactic fleet captain that commands a band of murderous pirates as they fly around space, pillaging and destroying whatever comes in their way.

And as a captain, Emeraldas isĀ terrifying. Sheā€™s calm, composed, has no mercy whatsoever. And has a constant death glare.

Because she has nothing to lose at this point, since she has lost so much in the past that she can basically look death in the eyes and give it a wink.

15. Marika Katou

Posted : 2 years, 6 months ago on 6 July 2022 05:48 (A review of Marika Katou)

Anime:Ā Bodacious Space Pirates

Marika has quite the unique background, at least as far as this list is considered.

Sheā€™s anything but bloodthirsty, savage of power-hungry. In fact, she was just a normal high schooler.

That is, until she was approached by two men asking her to lead a band of pirates because her father used to occupy that role. She accepts, and although sheā€™s still far from what I would picture a pirate to be, she did her job.

Goes to show you that nepotism can even get you a captainā€™s title.

16. Donquixote Doflamingo

Posted : 2 years, 6 months ago on 6 July 2022 05:47 (A review of Donquixote Doflamingo)

Anime:Ā One Piece

You knew it was only a matter of time before One Piece came up.

Doflamingo was one of my favorite antagonists in the series, just because he was built up so well.

I mean, just look at this guy. How is he rocking that outfit so hard?

Why does he never stop smiling, and how can one smile contain so much bloodlust?

And the man was not all talk, as his pink and feathery behind sat at a kingā€™s throne. And he was even titled as a Warlord.

17. Liliana

Posted : 2 years, 6 months ago on 6 July 2022 05:46 (A review of Liliana)

Anime:Ā Queenā€™s Blade: Rebellion

Here we have another pirate queen, and I dare say sheā€™s evenĀ moreĀ stubborn than the last.

Liliana would never choose to surrender. But it seems that even death canā€™t hold her down for long.

As she meets her fate in Davy Jonesā€™ locker, only to come back under the Witchā€™s command and start causing even more troubleā€¦ only this time she has a phantom crew.

Itā€™s also worth mentioning that sheā€™s the most eloquent pirate youā€™re likely to ever see. She acts more like a noble with a pirate hat than a blood thirsty rebel.

6. Lightning (Claire Farron)

Posted : 2 years, 6 months ago on 6 July 2022 04:10 (A review of Lightning)

First appearance:Ā Final Fantasy XIII (2009)

If thereā€™s something Iā€™ve learned throughout my time playing Final Fantasy games, itā€™s that pink-haired women are not to be trifled with.

And Lightning is the most dangerous of them all.

This former Cocoon soldier is a combat savant of god-like skill. But what makes her truly incredible is how she managed to carry theĀ entiretyĀ of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy on her back.

It was Lightningā€™s badassery (along with the gameā€™s incredible visuals) that kept me hooked.

This versatile hero has also made a name for herself in the world of fashion.

Her outfit in the game looks incredible, but she rocksĀ [Link removed - login to see]Ā andĀ [Link removed - login to see]Ā like a supermodel.

12. GLaDOS

Posted : 2 years, 6 months ago on 6 July 2022 04:05 (A review of GLaDOS)

First appeared in:Ā Portal (2007)

GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disc Operating System) is the feminine artificial intelligence that acts as your guide through the Aperture Science's Enrichment Centre in Valve's superbly inventive Portal. Spurring the main character on with the promise of cake, GLaDOS initially takes the form of a benevolent overseer - albeit one that makes slightly anomalous and threatening remarks. It's not until she demands the incineration of your much cherished Companion Cube that the player begins to suspect that the screws in this demented AI are quite literally coming loose.

Yet, for all of her malicious HAL-like conduct, as she begins to lose control of your portal-jumping ways, her increasingly demented, robotic taunts - and often, by her own admission, lies - become a constant highlight, with some of the psychotic asides being nothing less than comedy gold. While she appears to have been destroyed at the game's climax, the inspired end-credit song "I'm still alive" bodes well for her triumphant return in Portal 2.
