JonTron review

Posted : 2 years, 2 months ago on 3 March 2022 02:41 (A review of JonTron)

Like most YouTubers in person he seems awkward but on the show when it comes to scripts, delivery and general humour he's always been great. He used to make Game Grumps funny just by improvising (it's very not funny now without him).

An overall great guy who makes great content, though I can't say I'm happy with one video a year or with how he 'moved on' from reviewing retro games into more generic content.

Regardless, the person as well as the character are golden, looking forward to anything he decides to do.

PewDiePie review

Posted : 2 years, 2 months ago on 3 March 2022 02:38 (A review of PewDiePie)

Warning: Spoilers
A fabulous comedy series where a angry-obsessed video game nerd plays all kinds of games we will like to play in difference. Felix Kjellberg is a very hilarious person even though he is very loud and freakin annoying it's still a very funny lack of comedy. With his girlfriend and vlogger Marzia Bisognin has more serious attitude than PewDiePie.

This series has his own lack of humor like gaming, vlogging and off-color humor from all sort. This is the series that you should have watched a day ago. This series has over a million days to watch over. Just like Smosh but even smarter. Watch more and laugh more

The origin he originated from England was normally gonna be there. This lack of entertainment can't stop us at all.

Game Theory review

Posted : 2 years, 2 months ago on 3 March 2022 02:36 (A review of Game Theory)

Warning: Spoilers
MatPat shows the science behind video game's commonly, and sometimes not so commonly, asked questions such as "Who is W.D. Gaster?", "Which Link is the Strongest?", and "The Real Value of Zelda Rupees", where he crosses over with Austin Hargrave, from the popular channel Peanut Butter Gamer and PBGGameplay. MatPat comes up with many interesting solutions to the questions he tackles, though sometimes unpopular, like in his "Sans' Secret Identity" episode where he *SPOILER ALERT* decided Sans may be Ness from the EarthBound and Mother series'.

Dramedy at its most addictive

Posted : 2 years, 2 months ago on 3 March 2022 01:35 (A review of Gilmore Girls)

Love comedy. Love drama. Love comedy and drama together. Numerous great examples in all three of those groups in both film and television. When a show is addictive you know that is a good, even great, sign. One where you start watching and find yourself watching 6 episodes in one sitting, the odd toilet break aside (needed for someone with bouts of stomach sensitivity like me). When a show makes you unsure as to whether to continue but still do it for fairness sake, that isn't so good a sign. There are numerous examples of both too.

'Gilmore Girls' was a surprise hit for me. For some reason, it didn't appeal to me at first on paper and didn't seem like my kind of thing. Saw it though because a lot of my friends consider it one of their favourite shows and my godparents also were shocked by how much they liked it. They were also the ones that introduced me to 'Gilmore Girls', started watching it and very quickly got me hooked, judging that by bedtime seven episodes had been watched. Continued to binge watch, and it became amazingly the most addictive show seen recently since my recent re-watching of 'The Borgias'.

Not perfect mind. Some of the dialogue delivery is too rapid fire and rushed, some may need subtitles but didn't find that necessary personally (do know people that do). Some of the filming early on is a little flat. Didn't love every character, Dean for example was borderline controlling and Paris' condescending way of speaking took some getting used to (did find myself growing to relate to her, being someone who puts pressure on themselves too and forgets to relax due to over-anxiousness).

However, the filming does improve and really like the close knit feel of Stars Hollow, Emily and Richard's opulent big house and The Inn, which isn't run as too cold an environment. Sookie and especially Michel, one of my favourite characters, liven it up significantly. The music is only used when necessary and isn't placed obtrusively or randomly. The theme song is one of television's catchiest and its lyrics are inspiring and brilliantly sums up what 'Gilmore Girls' is all about.

The writing is one of 'Gilmore Girls' greatest strengths. The comedic moments have sharpness and wit and hilarious at times. Sarcastic humour, usually courtesy of Lorelei often directed at Emily, is usually not my thing and it tends to be mean-spirited in general, the writing here just about avoids stepping that line. There is also a lot of drama that is always relatable and handled with truth and poignancy. The numerous references to film, music, books/authors, pop culture etc. bring a smile to my face all the time, maybe familiarity with what is being referenced is in order which won't be a problem for most people but they have seldom gone over my head. The stories for each episode are slight but never feel dull and are carried by the identifiable situations the characters find themselves in and the relationships/chemistry the characters, who are somewhat stereotypes but not unrealistic or difficult-to-get-behind ones, have with each other.

Not just the best friend-like mother/daughter relationship between Lorelei and Rory, despite numerous spats and different ways of handling situations it is clear how much they love each other. But also the friction, but with attempts to make things better, between Lorelei and Emily, which will resonate with anybody in difficult parental relationships, and the friendship/tension between Lorelei and Luke. Love the performances, especially Lauren Graham who carries the show with ease throughout. Alexis Bledel, appealing as Rory, has lovely chemistry with her, while Yanic Truesdale is a comic joy as Michel and it was great to see Melissa McCarthy in a subtler sort of comedy role compared to her comic roles now. Kelly Bishop is suitably firm, Scott Patterson is both strong-willed and sympathetic and there is even the bonus of a distinguished-looking Edward Hermann.

In conclusion, great, addictive show. 9/10

Sacre bleu! C'est magnifique!

Posted : 2 years, 2 months ago on 3 March 2022 01:27 (A review of Amรฉlie)

Amelie promised to be quirky, cute and charming, and I think it succeeded. It mayn't be to everybody's tastes, but I really liked the film mainly for its irresistible and playful charm. The film may be a little too long, but what does compensate are a number of things.

Firstly, the visuals are a feast to the eyes. The visuals alone make it feel as though you'd just walked into a fairytale. The settings are colourful, the costumes lush, the editing crisp and the cinematography fluid with some inventive zooms. Secondly, the music score is wonderful, romantic, charming and sweet. I will say I have been on holiday four times to France, one thing that always sticks out as a highlight, asides from the beauty of the countryside and the majesty of the Parisian buildings is the true romanticism of the music itself. I love it, and I love France! Also, I love French, I enjoyed learning it, speaking it, reading it, I wasn't particularly great at it but it interested me. Hearing those charming french words caress my ears filled me with delight, it really helped that the script sparkled like bubbles on a glass of champagne. The story is ceaselessly charming and inventive, and I was surprised how quickly the film went as well. Finally I loved the performances, whether it was Mathieu Kassowitz's handsome loner, Rufus as Amelie's father or Yolande Moreau as Madeleine. But Audrey Tautou was the epitome of grace and charm as Amelie, the Montmartre waitress whose selfless "joie de vivre" leads her to improve the lives of her friends and neighbours. Tautou has natural charm, allure and a lovely face with an enchanting smile, and in my opinion Amelie is very iconic as a film character, annoying to some but enchanting to others. Overall, I loved Amelie, it was wonderful to watch, Tautou was enchanting and it was charming. 9.5/10 Bethany Cox

The Usual Suspects review

Posted : 2 years, 2 months ago on 3 March 2022 01:20 (A review of The Usual Suspects)

As an avid cinephile, who watches a lot of films to help me to be distracted from the pressures of everyday life, old and new and of all genres (have never had a bias against any genre and never love older films and dismiss new films, or vice versa), 'The Usual Suspects' was one of the finest films personally seen in a while.

Other films to have that effect on me (and garnered 10/10 ratings, a rare rating for me these days) are 'LA Confidential', 'Amores Perros', Orson Welles' version of 'The Trial', 'City of God' and 'The Song of Bernadette', though some films came close as well as re-watches of favourites like 'Se7en', 'Much Ado About Nothing' (1993) and 'The Remains of the Day'.

Simply put, 'The Usual Suspects' is a magnificent film all round that deserves to be re-watched over and over again, one of the few films seen recently to not find any fault with it. Fully deserving of its reputation as one of the best modern, and perhaps overall, films ever made. Not everybody is going to disagree and that is fine.

'The Usual Suspects' is slickly and audaciously made, filmed with a lot of style and is atmospherically directed. It is also hauntingly scored. It is intricately and intelligently written by Christopher McQuarrie, some of the best screen-writing he ever did. It is beautifully and deftly directed by Bryan Singer. If remembered correctly, neither McQuarrie or Singer were well known at the time and it was 'The Usual Suspects' that put them on the map.

Film is famous for the iconic line-up scene, the noticeboard that haunts everybody forever and its killer twist, one for the ages and not one to forget in the long one. Twists have wildly varied in film, there are some ingenious ones but also some naff ones, 'The Usual Suspects' is one of the ingenious ones. 'The Usual Suspects' as said before doesn't just have its twist going for it. The flashback-packed story is similarly intricate and never feels muddled or convoluted.

It has some of the finest ensemble acting there has ever been. This is especially true for a mesmerising Kevin Spacey in one of the most deserved Oscar Wins that year. Spacey is just one of the all round brilliant performances. Pete Postelthwaite, an always dependable actor who is still very much missed, is suitably mysterious, and Dan Hedaya and Chazz Palminteri make their mark as the confused cops. Steven Baldwin doesn't have a particularly challenging role but has never been better, Gabriel Byrne is also solid.

Overall, magnificent film in every sense. Recommended with no hesitation. 10/10 Bethany Cox

One of the all time great super-hero movies

Posted : 2 years, 2 months ago on 3 March 2022 01:00 (A review of Superman)

Superman may be corny and cheesy to some people, but for those who grew up with it it is as original and as exciting as it was 30+ years ago. The spectacle of the film is terrific, the cinematography is wonderful and the special effects are dazzling. In terms of effective scenes, the scenes with Clark and Lois are cute and don't take up too much of the film or harm it in any way, while the confrontation between him and Lex Luthor is suitably bright and breezy and the opening is wonderfully elegiac. The score's main theme is iconic and just superb, John Williams has done some wonderful scores before, this score is no exception. The direction is innovative and the script is sophisticated enough. I also much enjoyed the acting. Christopher Reeve is perfectly cast as Clark/Superman while Gene Hackman is superb as the calculating yet comic Lex Luthor. Overall, just terrific fun! 10/10 Bethany Cox

Jingle All the Way review

Posted : 2 years, 2 months ago on 3 March 2022 12:55 (A review of Jingle All the Way)

Jingle All the Way is far from perfect, but it is fun and worthwhile. The plot tells of an overworked businessman who wants to buy a Turbo Man, the year's hottest toy, for his neglected son. In the title role of Howard Langston, Arnold Schwarznegger acquits himself well, particularly in the action sequences. The soundtrack is awesome, the film is not too bad to look at and the climax is a lot of fun if very far fetched. Sinbad is amusing is Myron, and James Belushi is great as the Crooked Santa. Phil Hartmann(while he has been better) is hilarious as Ted, the phone conversation between him and Howard is a hoot. Rita Wilson does a good job as the mother, and Jake Lloyd is cute as Jamie. The film has some nice messages for kids. While the film is funny in places, the humour is questionable sometimes. The film is also rather short, and perhaps a tad rushed. Also Brian Levant's direction could have done with a harder edge. Still, despite the failings, it is a fun Christmas comedy, that is not really to be taken seriously. I call it a guilty pleasure. 6/10 Bethany Cox
