A gritty, more adult Wolverine film

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 25 May 2022 06:59 (A review of Logan)

Warning: Spoilers
It is 2029 and Logan is getting old and tired. Most of the mutants are long gone although Professor Charles Xavier is still alive; he too is old though and as his mind goes so does the control of his powers. Logan is working as a limo drive in the area near the Mexican border and is approached by a woman asking him to drive her and a young girl, Laura, to North Dakota. It turns out Laura is a mutant with similar powers to Logan; unlike him though she isn't a natural mutation but one of a group of new mutants created in a lab in Mexico City as part of an experiment to create super-soldiers. When the experiment was judged to have failed the children were due to be killed so their carers are trying to get them to safety. Logan is initially unwilling to get involved but eventually ends up heading north with Laura and Xavier. They are pursued by those determined to retrieve Laura; everybody who gets in their way is expendable.

Those expecting another 'X-Men' film will certainly get a bit of a shock; this is not an exciting superhero movie suitable for all but young children. Instead it is almost consistently downbeat with some fairly brutal violence as Logan and Laura remove limbs and puncture skulls with their adamantium claws. There are some genuine surprises as bad things happen to characters one would expect to be safe. Hugh Jackman is great in the lead role, showing a different side to Logan; he is no longer young and angry, instead he is old and world-weary. Young Dafne Keen impresses as Laura; an almost feral girl who makes Hit Girl from 'Kick-Ass' look gentle! There are nods to other films; most notably 'Shane', which Laura watches with Xavier and their search for the possibly mythical Eden in North Dakota reminded me of a different Logan's search for Sanctuary in 'Logan's Run'. I'd certainly recommend this to older X-Men fans but would caution against showing it to younger fans as it is very violent and has some pretty depressing moments.

A revolution to 3D insanity

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 25 May 2022 05:47 (A review of Grand Theft Auto III)

Warning: Spoilers
The good: It started a revolution of bringing the ps2 to it's potential, nice free roaming and a compelling storyline which is better than most films.

The bad: The main character has no voice acting.

GTA3 was a revolution for games. It started the already great (on the playstation for its time) GTA series all over again. It has good graphics for its time and a fairly large map filled with many things to do, including taxi driver, paramedic, firefighter, just as side missions.

The main story is also very compelling. You start off in Liberty City, the worst city in America, a city full of districts such as red light districts all the way to rich suburbs. The city is based off of New York City. This game also contains great humour and a full soundtrack radio, featuring music from the early 2000's and even an opera station.

The closest thing to live in a parallel world.

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 25 May 2022 05:43 (A review of Grand Theft Auto IV)

Oh, finally a real gaming experience that allows you to be a mafia member. The setting, music, situations, and even graphics really make you a part of the whole experience.

You get to explore the sandbox world of the game while getting into dangerous missions that include mobsters, criminal missions, and you even have time for your personal life.

This is a great experience that demonstrates that new millennium systems capacity to recreate a parallel universe that will transport you in a parallel life to say something...

Maybe I'm over praising this video game but believe me, until you play it, you will understand the whole experience...

Great Game!!

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 25 May 2022 05:36 (A review of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City)

Warning: Spoilers
Contains minor spoilers!

This highly addictive and truly awesome game is yet another fine addition to the GTA series. Following up on last year's smash hit GTA 3, this one not only takes it a step further, but goes above and beyond. This one features new characters, tons of great music, much more interactive environments and buildings, and tons of other great features, choices and options.

The Cop With Nothing 2 Lose Is Back!!!,

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 25 May 2022 05:31 (A review of Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne)

Warning: Spoilers
I think Max Payne 2 is awesome and just as great as the original! Two years after the original, Max is a NYPD cop who is investigating a series of murders by a group of hit men known as The Cleaners. Max sees Mona Sax, a woman who he thought was dead. Throughout the dark and rainy night, Max kills the cleaners, Mona helps Max, Max is betrayed, the police station is attacked, Max and Mona investigate the Inner Circle, who Vladimir Lem wants to be the leader. The action and graphics are awesome! The storyline is awesome! I have played this game a lot for the past 6 years and can't wait for the 3rd chapter! If you love Max Payne, you'll love MAX PAYNE 2: THE FALL OF MAX PAYNE!!!

One of my favorite games of all time!

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 25 May 2022 05:28 (A review of Max Payne)

Warning: Spoilers
I've played quite a few video games in my lifetime, but none have grabbed me half as much as the Max Payne games. I love the dark neo-noir vibe the series gives off. And the first of the series is no exception. This game is brilliant. This game holds up today and that is amazing. Especially considering this games age, I've tried to replay many games from my childhood and none of them seem to be close to how good I viewed them to be as a kid. But this is one game where no matter how many times I play it just keeps getting better. The story is gripping and its a shame that 20th Century Fox messed up the movie the way they did. Because I feel that if they movie even had half as much intensity and story telling ability as the game, it would've been a success. The game play in this game is its best feature. It was unrivaled back then and as far as I'm concerned it remains unrivaled now. The bullet time is fantastic, it forces you to create ways to take out your enemies using it, because if you don't use it you will be dead. The painkiller health system is also done well. You can't just use all your painkillers at once, you have to conserve them until you absolutely need them. The pain killer system is a creative way to replenish your health instead of just regenerating it when your injured, it makes you responsible for healing yourself. The gun play is stellar and compliments bullet time very well. Not enough good things can be said about this games game play. The graphics are great for 2000, I've seen games made 2-6 years later with worse graphics. That just tells you how good they were for that time. You obviously can't compare them to the kind of games that are out today. But for their time that are good. WARNING POSSIBLE SPOILERS, BUT ONLY IN THIS PARAGRAPH SKIP UNTIL YOU SEE MORE CAPS TO READ THE REST OF THE REVIEW And that brings us to the story. It is a simple but well crafted revenge plot. It's been years since Max Payne's wife and baby daughter have been killed. Max's friend Alex finds something out relating to their murder but before Alex can tell Max, he is killed. Sending Max on a violent revenge fueled rampage involving mobsters, cops, and a company called Aesir. Thats as much as I would dare to spoil about this terrific game. SPOILERS ARE DONE The story is well thought out, dark, and takes many twists and turns. Its a dark neo-noir thrill ride that puts a lot of Hollywood films to shame. I would recommend this game to anyone who loves dark stories. The game is somewhat difficult at times so I wouldn't recommend it to casual gamers (I'm using "casual gamer" in the sense that you aren't that good at games, I rarely play video games so to most people I would be considered casual, but I'm very good at them) but if you are up for a challenging game with stellar game play and a great plot this game is for you. 10/10 (There are only a handful of games I would even think about rating this high)

3. Thor

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 25 May 2022 04:46 (A review of Thor (Chris Hemsworth))

Once the arrogant heir to all of Asgard, and then an exiled brat in need of absolution, Thor watched as his fallen adopted brother Loki waged war on a planet the God of Thunder had come to love and appreciate: Earth. Emotional, and often temperamental, Thor would continue to help out on Earth, vanquishing dark elves, HYDRA soldiers, Ultron drones, and more while trying to carve out his own path and destiny. One that didn't involve ruling over Asgard. Whether he's pining over his lost love, Jane Foster, bickering with Loki, getting into friendly scrapes with Hulk, or eating a ton of carbs out of guilt, Thor is the entertainingly excitable member of the Avengers.

4. Peter Parker (Spider-Man)

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 25 May 2022 04:44 (A review of Peter Parker / Spider-Man (Tom Holland))

Gifted high-school student Peter Parker had barely ever stepped outside of Queens before being recruited by Tony Stark to help stop Captain America and his allies from protecting wanted fugitive Bucky Barnes. And with that, Parker, and his surrogate son-style relationship with Tony, became the beating heart of the MCU's Phase 3. As a child "thwipping" about in the deadly affairs of grown-ups (and Mad Titans), young Parker has defeated Vulture, Shocker, disgruntled Stark Industries technician Mysterio, and his own fears about asking MJ out on a date. But it was Parker's death during The Snap that hit Tony the hardest, and eventually convinced the Armored Avenger to join the others in a "time heist" to retrieve the Stones. Parker's wide-eyed optimism and eagerness to do good was exactly what the MCU needed, and exactly what the Avengers needed to undo all of Thanos' damage.

Most recently, Peter was reminded of the great power/great responsibility motto that is core to his character as he lost his Aunt May and gave up all of his friends for the betterment of those around him.
