love this game

Posted : 2 years, 3 months ago on 16 July 2022 05:48 (A review of Metroid)

My all time favorite game. A friend had a working NES system a few years back, and I raved about this game. I got it off Amazon and played it with them. I was not disappointed, and quickly fell back into the patterns, challenges, and fun times I had with this game as a child. I spent many nights playing this growing up, and I think that it is a skill to master a game as difficult as this one. It took me a long time to beat this game, and using the codes do not justify the work and satisfaction that comes along with the start to finish of Metroid. This game is awesome. Pick up an old copy and see. The new versions are pretty cool too, but none of them compare to this gem

Great Game

Posted : 2 years, 3 months ago on 16 July 2022 05:45 (A review of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link)

Being only the second game in the Zelda series, it can't be said that there was an established format for the series. This is, as stated above, a great game; combining a gigantic over world map with wandering monsters, which then converts to a side scroller to fight the various types of beasts. Link can go to towns and converse with the local populations, explore caves, temples and the like. Unlike in the first game, Link can now gain experience, learn new sword techniques and cast spells!

The story begins after the original "Legend of Zelda" with Ganon's minions trying to resurrect their fallen master by sprinkling Link's blood on Ganon's ashes. The storyline is very deep brought to life by the expanse of the world map and the depth of the game play and exploration. Highly recommended game for any fan of the Zelda series.

I know I'm leaving stuff out, but I hope this description will help anyone unfamiliar with the Zelda series.

AWESOME TITLE!

Posted : 2 years, 3 months ago on 16 July 2022 05:41 (A review of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past)

Out of the countless masterpieces to come down the line in the early library of video games, easily up there in the top 20 if not the top 10 games of all time, mention one of the greatest and addicting titles of all time! It is one of those rare games you can play over and over again and still enjoy!

If I could, I'd vote higher than a 10 for this game, it just simply deserves it!

Legendary

Posted : 2 years, 3 months ago on 16 July 2022 05:39 (A review of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess)

I must confess that I am not a Zelda expert, this was the first 3D Zelda game I've ever played (I have played a few GBS Zelda titles though so it completely new to me) but it was pure brilliance.

It plays so well with the Wii's controls and the story is so deep and it is so satisfying to figure out the next step. It will also lull you into a false sense of security, you'll think it's a peaceful moment when suddenly, something thrilling and unexpected happens and the plot thickens.

It looks great, the story keeps you playing and it makes the Nintendo Wii a must have just so you can play this game. Well done Nintendo!

A very good film and very underrated

Posted : 2 years, 3 months ago on 14 July 2022 01:05 (A review of The Haunted Palace)

I don't consider The Haunted Palace one of Vincent Price's or Roger Corman's best. I do put Pit and the Pendulum, The Raven, The Fall of the House of Usher and especially Masque of the Red Death above it, but it is a very good film and worth checking out. It does get a little ponderous at times in the middle and while eerie in tone the music score is over-the-top. However it is well photographed and has beautiful sets. The writing has some fun and macabre moments and the story delivers its suspenseful atmosphere and creepy scares wonderfully even if the enacting terrible revenge angle is familiar territory. Corman's direction is secure also. The acting is very good. Debra Paget before she retired is beautiful and not too bland. Lon Chaney is wonderful, and his entrance is one of The Haunted Palace's creepiest moments. Even better is Price, he is in a double role here and he is deliciously evil. All in all, very good and very enjoyable, I just wish that it had more attention. 8/10 Bethany Cox

A slick 1950s sci-fi

Posted : 2 years, 3 months ago on 14 July 2022 12:48 (A review of The Fly)

I haven't yet seen the David Croenberg remake, though I have heard it is superior, but this was still very good and certainly worth seeing. Even with some inconsistencies in the story and one or two cheesy moments, The Fly is a slick 1950s sci-fi. Unlike some people I actually found the "help me help me" bit quite creepy, maybe predictable for those who have seen it umpteen times, but the image of a half-human/fly being trapped in a cobweb and screaming those words quite unsettled me, and after seeing the film it is that scene that I remember most.

The production values are very good and look very nice still, and the music is suitably chilling. The script has some nice touches too, and the acting is fine. David Hedison does a very good job as eccentric scientist Andre Delambre, and Vincent Price, one of the main reasons why I wanted to see this film as I am a big fan of his, is great as Francois, the brother who has histrionics about family curses. Overall, definitely worth seeing, not absolutely outstanding mind, but I do recommend it. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Can't go wrong with Vincent Price

Posted : 2 years, 3 months ago on 14 July 2022 12:45 (A review of The Pit and the Pendulum)

My main attractions to Pit and the Pendulum were Edgar Allan Poe, I love his sense of atmosphere and the fun, haunting writing style, and Vincent Price, who no matter the film or the quality of the script is one of those actors who always delivered. Pit and the Pendulum is an example of both and the genre at their best. Visually, I never really got the sense that it was a limited budget, the Gothic air and the eerie settings worked wonders, and the whole film is directed beautifully. The score is atmospheric, the story, cleverly expanded from Poe's work, is still fun, disturbing and shocking and the dialogue is intelligently arch. The acting is very good. John Kerr is rather wooden, but Barbara Steele is great in her brief appearances and Luana Anders and Antony Carbone are excellent in their supporting roles. Best of all is Price, his distinctive commanding voice, a demeanour that is both scary and sympathetic and almost Shakespearean delivery of his dialogue altogether makes for yet another brilliant performance. Overall, a terrific film, one of Price's best, both in film and performance. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Enjoyable, if not great

Posted : 2 years, 3 months ago on 14 July 2022 12:43 (A review of The Bat)

I saw The Bat mainly for one of my favourite actors Vincent Price. I found the film enjoyable on the most part. Some parts are a little too talky, the middle drags and the twist is revealed too early. However it is atmospherically shot and the house itself is amazing. There is also a haunting score, a suspenseful atmosphere that keeps things taut, crisp dialogue and a gimmicky but intriguing and fun, on the most part, story. Vincent Price is not in the film much but that doesn't stop him from stealing all his scenes seamlessly with his effortlessly charismatic and suave presence, his distinctive voice and droll delivery. Agnes Moorhead is even better in a terrific performance that is wonderfully crotchety with deliciously incredulous delivery of lines and body language. Overall, an enjoyable if flawed movie. 7/10 Bethany Cox

Engrossing futuristic horror

Posted : 2 years, 3 months ago on 14 July 2022 12:36 (A review of The Last Man on Earth)

Of the three films based on I Am Legend, The Last Man on Earth is my personal favourite. I also liked The Omega Man, though didn't care for the 2007 film I Am Legend. This futuristic horror is very engrossing stuff, slowly paced yet deliberately so with an ending that has always moved me. There may be lapses in logic in the script, however so much compensates. The sets and filming are minimalistic and stark, and this approach adds much to the apocalyptic feel of the story. The score is haunting, the creatures are appropriately creepy, the film is beautifully directed and the story is full of suspenseful yet beautiful atmosphere. Vincent Price here gives one of his more restrained performances, often interacting to little or nothing, very different from the arch yet sympathetic roles that show him at his very best. While also stoic and vulnerable, he shows terror and despair brilliantly.

All in all, engrossing with a different but wonderful performance from Price and a real sense of atmosphere. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Classic Price, Lorre and Karloff movie

Posted : 2 years, 3 months ago on 14 July 2022 12:34 (A review of The Raven)

For a long time I have loved The Raven, always have found funny and spooky with great lead performances and atmosphere. And I still think that. The special effects are a little dated, but are not bad enough to upset the film too much. Besides the Gothic settings are lavish and add to the atmosphere wonderfully. The throw-away one-liners and the dialogue in general is very clever, witty and arch, while the story while not bearing resemblance much to the Poe poem is thrilling in the duel between Price and Karloff and with a great atmosphere. The cast are brilliant. It was nice to see a young Jack Nicholson, and Hazel Court is a lovely presence. But the three leads are the main selling points. Boris Karloff's eerie command wonderfully sends up his classic screen image. Vincent Price is as ever brilliant, with his delivery wonderfully arch and his voice suave and distinctive. Stealing the film is Peter Lorre, his tipsy comic incompetence is a joy to watch and the comedy judged beautifully.

Overall, a comedy-horror classic. 9/10 Bethany Cox
